Fishing in Heartopia: beginner guide (aiming, line tension, bait)

Fishing in Heartopia (beginner guide)

Fishing is one of the best early hobbies because it stacks progress: steady Gold, collection entries, and cheap ingredients for Cooking.

Once Fishing is unlocked, you can fish anywhere you see fish shadows in water.

How to unlock Fishing (Vanya + Repair Kit)

Fishing shows up early. Vanya gives you a simple quest: fix a broken rod using a Repair Kit crafted at the Workbench with 5x Branch.

After that, the “permanent” unlock usually involves a Hobby Expansion Ticket (granted early in progression). Hand the ticket to Vanya and Fishing becomes available from your Toolbox.

How fishing works (casting + hook + tension)

Two things make beginners fail: aiming and line tension.

1) Find a shadow and stand at the water edge

Look for dark fish shadows in water. Bigger shadows often mean better fish.

Fish shadows are your targets. Cast slightly in front of them.

2) Aim better (PC and mobile)

  • Mobile: tap to cast, and tap/hold to aim more precisely before releasing.
  • PC: click to cast, and click/hold to aim more precisely before releasing.

Rule of thumb: cast in front of the shadow, not behind it.

3) Manage line tension (this decides the catch)

When a fish bites, you reel by holding the input. Watch line color:

  • White: safe to reel
  • Yellow: reel carefully / short pauses help
  • Red: release briefly immediately (or the line snaps)
If the line turns red (or starts flashing), release briefly to reduce tension.

Red line is not “almost done”. It’s “release now”.

Bait: how to use it and why it’s fast

Bait reduces downtime by forcing a spawn right in front of you. Great for:

  • volume farming (Gold + proficiency)
  • faster collection progress
  • short sessions near home

Typical usage:

  1. stand at the water edge
  2. open inventory
  3. select Bait
  4. use Chum
  5. a fish spawns instantly

In some story stages, bait unlock is tied to a Vanya quest. If you don’t have the recipe yet, progress main quests and check again.

Fish Attractor and Mermaid Perfume (when they matter)

  • Mermaid Fish Attractor shines with other players nearby and can generate “blue flashing” shadows.
  • Mermaid Perfume is about efficiency per attempt, useful for tight weather/time windows.

Where to fish and how to plan

Fish spawns mostly revolve around:

  • Rivers
  • Lakes
  • Sea/Ocean

Rarer fish often depend on time + weather. Rainbow weather is widely known as a strong rare window.

Use:

  • FISH to filter by region/time/weather
  • MAP to route spots fast
  • RAINBOW WEATHER for rare windows

FAQ

Why won’t fish bite?

Usually aiming. Cast **in front of the shadow**, not behind. Holding input to aim helps a lot.

What do the line colors mean?

**White** = reel. **Yellow** = reel carefully/short pauses. **Red** = release briefly or the line snaps.

How do I use Bait properly?

Water edge → inventory → select **Bait** → use **Chum**. A fish spawns instantly in front of you.

Sell fish or cook fish?

As a rule: cheap fish cook well; expensive fish often sell better raw.

Who buys fish?

Most players sell fish to **Albert Jr.** for Gold.
